New Arrival: Ruppell’s Griffon Vulture at Disney
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is thrilled to announce the arrival of a precious new resident: a baby Rüppell’s griffon vulture. This adorable hatchling has been given the celestial name Lyra, a nod to the constellation, marking a bright new addition to the Lodge’s diverse animal family.

Dr. Mark Penning, VP of Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment, took to Instagram to share adorable pictures of the newborn Rüppell’s griffon vulture, Lyra. In his post, he highlighted the dedicated care she has received, noting, “Our animal care experts have been closely monitoring her from the moment she was an egg, and continue to support her as she grows.”
Lyra is receiving exceptional care from her parents, John and Janet, who are described as “nurturing her with great care.” This loving attention is particularly vital given the critically endangered status of Rüppell’s griffon vultures, a point emphasized by Dr. Penning as “especially significant.” He further noted the concerning decline of the species, tracing their classification on the IUCN Red List from “near threatened” in 2007 to “endangered” between 2012 and 2014, before ultimately being reclassified as “critically endangered” due to dwindling populations.
The Rüppell’s griffon vulture holds the remarkable distinction of being the highest-flying bird, with documented flights reaching an astonishing 11,300 meters (37,000 feet) above sea level. These impressive avian creatures are naturally found in the Sahel region and the diverse landscapes of East Africa.
